Beaver is a general name for three rodent species in two different taxonomic groups, i.e. Castoridae and Aplodontidae. Mountain beaver and Aplodontia Rufus are the only live beings in the Aplodontidae family and these are natives of North America’s Pacific coast. Mountain beavers are basically smaller than the usual beaver and look like muskrats.

Family of Castoridae includes two species, Castor canadensis (the common one or the true one) and Castor fiber (European or Eurasian beaver). In the past Eurasian beaver lived in the area from Eastern Siberia to British Isles. Near the conclusion of the 19th century, beaver population decreased to about 1250 what was caused by over hunting.

But fortunatelly, thanks to the protection, natural spread and reintroduction in the twentieth century, their number reached 583000 on 2004. Nowadays, you can find them across Europe, with the exception of southern Balkans, Iberia and Italy. You can find them in Khabarovsk as well, Mongolia and China.
